Windows Installer Freezes or Shows an Administrator Error

What This Looks Like

Some Windows users see the installer’s progress bar stop partway through — instead of the normal install-then-launch flow — sometimes followed by a generic error mentioning administrator rights.

Before You Try Anything Else

  1. Wait a few minutes. Antivirus or SmartScreen scanning a newly downloaded installer can look identical to a frozen progress bar.
  2. Check Task Manager for a lingering installer or setup process and end it if it is stuck.
  3. Check your internet connection — the installer may need to download components such as the WebView2 Runtime.

Run the Installer as Administrator

  1. Locate the downloaded installer file.
  2. Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
  3. Accept the User Account Control (UAC) prompt.
  4. Follow the setup wizard again from the start.

FAQ

The installer looks frozen on the progress bar. Should I wait or cancel?

Give it a couple of minutes — antivirus scanning of a freshly downloaded file can look like a frozen progress bar. If it has not moved for more than 5 minutes, cancel and try again running the installer as administrator.

Where can I find Windows installer logs?

Check Event Viewer under Windows Logs > Application for entries around the time you ran the installer (source similar to MsiInstaller). Also check your Downloads folder and the %TEMP% folder for any .log file created during setup.

I see a generic administrator error. What does that mean?

This usually means the installer needs elevated permissions. Right-click the installer file, choose "Run as administrator", and try again.
