Short answer
On macOS, the orange microphone indicator means an app currently has an open microphone stream. In current versions of Weesper Neon Flow, the app can keep that stream ready after your first dictation so the next dictation starts faster.
This does not mean that Whisper is transcribing in the background.
Weesper records and transcribes only when you actively start dictation with your shortcut. When no dictation is active, idle audio frames are discarded and are not sent to the transcription engine.
Why Weesper keeps the microphone ready
Opening the microphone from scratch can add a short delay at the beginning of a dictation. On some computers or audio devices, that delay can make the first word feel clipped.
Keeping the microphone stream ready helps Weesper:
- start recording faster when you press the shortcut;
- avoid losing the first syllable;
- keep the dictation experience responsive.
The trade-off is that macOS may continue to show the microphone indicator while Weesper is running.
What happens when you are not dictating
When you are not holding or triggering the dictation shortcut:
- Weesper is not saving a dictation buffer;
- Whisper is not transcribing;
- your dictated text is not being produced;
- audio is not sent to a cloud transcription service.
The microphone stream is only kept ready so the next recording can begin quickly.
How to turn the indicator off now
If you want the macOS microphone indicator to disappear immediately:
- Open the Weesper Neon Flow menu bar icon.
- Choose Quit.
- Reopen Weesper Neon Flow when you want to dictate again.
Closing the main window is not always the same as quitting the app. Weesper may continue running in the menu bar so your shortcut can remain available.
Privacy mode
We are adding a setting that lets you close the microphone stream between dictations. With that setting enabled, the macOS indicator can turn off when you are not dictating.
The trade-off is that the next dictation may start slightly less instantly, because Weesper must reopen the microphone before recording.
If the microphone seems stuck
Contact support if:
- the microphone indicator stays on even after you fully quit Weesper;
- Weesper shows microphone activity but dictation does not work;
- the dictation HUD or waveform disappears while text insertion still works.
Include your macOS version, Weesper version, and whether quitting and reopening the app clears the indicator.
