Everything stated below about Apple comes from Apple’s own support documentation and newsroom, listed at the end. Where Apple does not publish an answer, we say so rather than guess.
What does Apple Intelligence actually change about dictation?
It changes the model behind dictation, not the plumbing around it. Apple describes the upgrade as one where “Dictation now captures what users say as polished text with greater precision, automatically handling capitalization, punctuation, and formatting as they speak.”
That is a real improvement, and it targets the most common complaint about voice input: raw transcript quality. But three qualifiers matter more than the headline.
Timing. Apple made the new Siri AI features available for developer testing on 8 June 2026 across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 and visionOS 27, with a general beta later in the year.
Language. Apple says the rollout starts with English and that support for more languages will follow.
Hardware. Apple lists the devices that run its most advanced on-device model as iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPad (M4) or later with at least 12GB of unified memory, and “Mac (M3) or later with at least 12GB of unified memory.”
Put those together and you get the single most useful fact in this comparison, and the one most articles skip. The improvement Apple announced in June 2026 is not necessarily the dictation running on your Mac today — it can be gated by your chip, by your language, or simply by the release schedule. Check all three before you assume the gap has closed.
Where does your audio go — on device, or to Apple’s servers?
Apple’s architecture is on-device first, servers when needed. What Apple documents is the routing rule, not a per-feature guarantee that a given dictation request stays on your Mac.
Apple Support states that “Apple Intelligence analyzes whether it can be processed on device” and that “for more complex requests, it can draw on Private Cloud Compute”, where “only the data that is relevant to your request is processed on Apple silicon servers, before being removed.”
Apple’s newsroom adds the commitment: “When Private Cloud Compute is handling users’ requests, their personal data is not stored nor made accessible to Apple or anyone else.”
Two practical consequences follow, and they point in opposite directions.
If your standard is “Apple’s privacy commitments are good enough for me”, built-in dictation is a perfectly reasonable choice. Apple even lets you generate a report in System Settings of the requests your Mac has sent to Private Cloud Compute.
If your standard is contractual — an NDA, a client security questionnaire, a hospital or law-firm policy stating that audio must not leave the endpoint — then “on device unless the request is complex” is not an answer you can put in a document. That is the whole of the argument for why local processing is the only defensible answer for confidential work.
Which languages and locales does macOS built-in dictation cover?
Apple publishes the list, and it is organised per locale, not per language. Apple’s dictation guide states plainly that “Dictation is not available in all languages or regions, and features may vary”, and points to the macOS Feature Availability page.
Read that page and the structure becomes obvious. Dictation is listed as English (United Kingdom), English (United States), English (India), Spanish (Spain), Spanish (Mexico), Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), and so on. Secondary features are narrower still: auto-punctuation is not offered for every locale that supports dictation.
Two failure modes follow from that structure:
- Your language is listed, but your regional variant is not.
- Your language and variant are listed, but a feature you depend on is not.

Can Apple’s dictation learn your vocabulary?
Not directly. macOS does have a custom vocabulary — it belongs to Voice Control, not to Dictation, and turning Voice Control on turns standard Dictation off.
Apple documents the capability precisely: “You can add up to 1000 vocabulary terms and teach Voice Control how to say them”, and you can import them “from a text file with each term on a separate line”.
Apple is equally precise about the trade-off: “When Voice Control is on, you use Voice Control to dictate text; standard macOS Dictation isn’t available.”
So the accurate version of “Apple has no custom vocabulary” is this: Apple has one, in a different feature, with a different interaction model, and you cannot pair it with the dictation experience Apple Intelligence is upgrading. If your working day is full of drug names, case citations, ticker symbols or Kubernetes objects, that is a genuine fork in the road.
Do long sessions and thinking pauses matter to you?
Apple documents the freedom and the limit in the same breath: “You can dictate text of any length without a timeout. Dictation stops automatically when no speech is detected for 30 seconds.”
There is no ceiling on how much you can say. There is a ceiling on how long you can think. For a two-line reply that never registers; for a 40-minute case note or a chapter draft it becomes a constant tax on attention, and macOS exposes no setting to change it. Apple silicon does bring one real advantage here: “On a Mac with Apple silicon, you can still use the keyboard while you speak; there’s no need to stop dictation.” If your rhythm is dictate, correct, dictate, that matters more than raw model quality.

Which profile are you?
Three patterns cover most Mac users, and each one resolves differently.
The occasional dictater. Replies, notes, search boxes, the odd paragraph. Built-in dictation wins outright: zero install, zero cost, and the Apple Intelligence upgrade lands in your lap for free. Do not pay for a problem you do not have.
The regulated or confidential professional. Legal, clinical, financial, HR, or anyone under an NDA. Your blocker is not accuracy, it is being able to describe your processing chain in writing. A local model that makes no network call is the only shape of answer that survives a security review.
The multilingual or technical writer. Two or more locales, or a vocabulary full of terms no general model has seen. Check Apple’s locale list first — if your variants are all there and your vocabulary is ordinary, stay with built-in. If either fails, the vocabulary limitation is structural, not something a future macOS update fixes.
